What motivates people to change jobs

When considering changing jobs The LinkedIn Talent Trends 2014 report found that money is an important factor to both active and passive candidates. However, it’s a much higher priority for passives.

As a matter of fact, they say it’s their number one motivation to switch careers, followed by work/ life balance. Active candidates, on the other hand, are relatively more interested in opportunities for advancement and more challenging work.

So let’s take a look the most important factors when looking to change jobs for both active and passive candidates from the report.

Active

  • Greater opportunities for advancement
  • Better compensation and benefits
  • More challenging work
  • Better fit for skill set
  • More learning opportunities

Passive

  • Better compensation and benefits
  • Better work/life balance
  • Greater opportunities for advancement
  • More challenging work
  • Better fit for skill set

Some of the interesting points to note here for the passive Australian candidates is that 39% are looking for better work / life balance against a global average of 31%.

The findings above are in line with research done as far back as the 1950s and 1960 when Frederick Herzberg researched the sources of employee motivation. Again, he shared these findings in the 2003 issue of HBR. He found that people are motivated by interesting work, challenge and increasing responsibility. He found that we are motivated by a need for growth and achievement.

How do these findings compare with your experience? We would be interested to know.
